Witch Watch Review (Rating: 4.5/5)
Overview
Witch Watch is a Japanese manga series created by Kenta Shinohara and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. It is a fantasy comedy centered on a witch and her familiar, combining everyday comedic situations with a gradually developing serious storyline.

At the core of the story are the various troubles caused by magic and the relationships between the characters. While it follows some stylistic elements seen in the author's previous works, it also creates its own rhythm by blending school comedy with fantasy elements.
Plot Summary
The story follows Morihito Otogi, a boy with the power of an ogre. He becomes the familiar and protector of his childhood friend, the witch Nico Wakatsuki.
After completing her magical training, Nico returns to town and begins living with Morihito while attending school. However, a prophecy warns that Nico will face a great disaster in the future. Morihito therefore takes on the role of protecting her from the dangers that may come.
At the same time, Nico’s magic often produces unexpected results, leading to a variety of chaotic and humorous situations in their daily life.
The series balances these lighthearted episodes with hints about the ominous future that awaits them.
Main Characters
Nico Wakatsuki
A young witch who has returned from magical training. She has a bright and honest personality, but her spells often produce unpredictable results. She trusts Morihito deeply.
Morihito Otogi
A boy with the blood of an ogre. With strong physical abilities, he serves as Nico’s familiar and protector. He is serious and responsible, and he often ends up dealing with the trouble caused by Nico’s magic.
Kanshi Kazamatsuri
A boy with tengu powers who becomes involved with Nico and Morihito. His unique personality adds another layer of comedy to the story.
Story Structure
One notable aspect of Witch Watch is the way it combines episodic comedy with a longer narrative.
Many chapters function as self-contained stories where Nico’s magic creates unusual problems in school or around town. These episodes focus on fast-paced humor and entertaining character interactions.
At the same time, the story slowly develops a larger plot related to the prophecy of Nico’s future disaster. While the series remains primarily comedic, it also gradually builds a broader narrative.
This balance between short comedic episodes and long-term storytelling makes the series particularly easy to read and enjoyable over time.
What Makes This Manga Unique
1. Highly polished comedy
The series shows a high level of craftsmanship as a comedy manga. It uses various styles of humor, including wordplay, situational comedy, and jokes based on character personalities. Because magic is involved, ordinary situations often develop in unexpected directions.
2. Character-driven storytelling
The story is driven more by the characters than by events. Each character has a clear personality, and those personalities directly shape both the humor and the story developments.
3. Balance between comedy and long-term narrative
The series keeps each chapter entertaining while also advancing a larger story in the background. This balance is relatively rare in shonen manga and contributes to the series’ readability.
My Thoughts
This work clearly shows the author’s strength in gradually developing a serious story while maintaining a strong comedic tone. I also liked the author's previous series SKET DANCE, and many of the same strengths can be seen here.
What impressed me most is how the female characters are written. Their appeal is not mainly sexualized; rather, it comes from their individuality and presence as characters.
Each character has clearly defined traits, and each of them also has a background story. I think this is a very typical style of characterization for shonen manga.
The way these backgrounds are written is particularly skillful. The characters’ pasts and personal situations are revealed in ways that are neither overly heavy nor superficial, which makes it easy for readers to become emotionally invested in them.
Since the story is still ongoing, I rated it 4.5 for now. However, depending on how the story develops in the future, it could easily become a full 5. Even when read purely as a comedy manga, it is already a highly polished and enjoyable work.
Conclusion
Witch Watch is a school fantasy comedy that successfully combines humor, character writing, and a gradually developing storyline. The series is easy to start reading because of its comedic tone, yet the depth of its characters and story keeps readers engaged over time.
It is an excellent recommendation not only for fans of comedy manga but also for readers who enjoy character-focused stories. Depending on how the narrative continues, it has the potential to become an even more highly regarded series.
